Vet-Stem CEO Chairs Veterinary Stem Cell Section at MSC 2011 at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH

September 12, 2011 --

Poway, California -- Vet-Stem, Inc. announced that Dr. Robert Harman, DVM, MPVM, CEO of Vet-Stem, chaired the first veterinary section at the prestigious MSC 2011 conference at Case Western Reserve University last month. Dr. Arnold Caplan, the host and global leader in regenerative medicine, invited speakers and attendees from around the globe to present and to learn about the latest research and clinical results in the field of adult stem cell therapy.

Dr. Caplan invited Dr. Harman to organize a veterinary section for presentation by leaders in the veterinary stem cell world. The presenters selected by Dr. Harman highlighted that veterinary clinical patients are excellent models for understanding how to apply stem cell therapy in human medicine. Dr. Harman presented the first talk titled “One Medicine and the FDA,” a talk about veterinary regenerative medicine and how it applies at the FDA.

Dr. Mike Conzemius, a board-certified veterinary surgeon and Endowed Professor of Surgery at the University of Minnesota, presented next. His talk, entitled “Naturally-Occurring Comparative Models for Regenerative Medicine in the Dog,” highlighted the commonality of orthopedic diseases between dogs and humans. Dr. Conzemius presented cutting edge data from ongoing research and clinical studies of adipose-derived stem cells in canine osteoarthritis.

The third presenter was Dr. Mark Martinelli, a board-certified equine surgeon at California Equine Orthopedics. His talk, entitled “Regenerative Medicine in Equine Orthopedics,” provided a research and clinical perspective on the use of regenerative medicine techniques in treating equine joint and soft tissue disease. Dr. Martinelli presented data on adipose stem cell therapy, platelet rich plasma applications, and the use of autologous conditioned serum. He concluded by sharing related data on adipose stem cell therapy in the human, graciously provided by Dr. Jason Dragoo, an orthopedist at Stanford University.

This invited panel of veterinary presenters was a first at a human stem cell meeting and provided a lively scientific interchange between the veterinary and human medical researchers and clinicians.

Vet-Stem’s clinical team has contributed to the industry by providing in-person and online training to over 4,000 veterinarians in the United States and Canada and by providing stem cell services for treatment of over 7,000 horses and dogs. Peer-reviewed publications in the journals Veterinary Therapeutics and the American Journal of Veterinary Research have demonstrated the effectiveness of these types of treatments in dogs and horses. In addition, Dr. Harman has co-authored three publications on how adipose-derived stem cells are helping treat multiple sclerosis, autoimmune diseases, and spinal cord injury in people. “One Medicine” shows the commonality of diseases and treatment between animals and humans and has been a guiding principle at Vet-Stem since its founding.

About Vet-Stem, Inc.

Vet-Stem, Inc. was formed in 2002 to bring regenerative medicine to the veterinary profession. This privately held company delivers stem cell and related services and products to veterinarians to treat diseases in dogs, cats and horses. These technologies utilize the natural healing properties inherent in all animals to reduce pain and improve the quality of life of our animal companions.

In January of 2004, Vet-Stem introduced the first veterinary stem cell service in the United States. Since that time there has been rapid adoption of this technology for treatment of tendon, ligament, and joint injuries by the veterinary community. Published studies have confirmed that these stem cells can dramatically improve the healing of injuries and diseases that have had very few treatment options in the past.
